BLOOD BANK RAPIDS Get the blood Donors tested for safe transfusion

The blood transfusion service in India is fragmented with a network of 2,760 blood banks owned by the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, collecting around 12 million units in a year. Most (77%) blood banks are attached to hospitals and 22% were stand-alone.

Blood banking is the process that takes place in the lab to make sure that donated blood, or blood products, are safe before they are used in blood transfusions and other medical procedures. Blood transfusions are needed for a wide range of health conditions including anaemia, complications during pregnancy and childbirth, severe trauma due to accidents, and surgical procedures. They are also regularly used for patients with conditions such as sickle cell disease and thalassaemia and for products to treat haemophilia.

Transfusion safety begins with healthy donors. Blood cannot be manufactured, and it can be received only from generous donors. Blood and blood products can result in significant adverse events including immunologic reactions, infections, inefficacy, and others which can sometimes result in death and severe disability.

BLOOD PRODUCTS & INFECTION

Reducing the risk of Transfusion Transmitted Infections (TTI) remains a crucial measure of blood transfusion safety. The diseases transmitted by blood transfusion are Human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), Syphilis, Malaria andinfrequently Cytomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, Brucellosis etc. WHO recommends that all blood for transfusion in resource-limited settings (RLSs) be mandatorily screened for HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis with either a combination of HIV antigen–antibodyor HIV antibodies, _epatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), a combination of HCV antigen– antibody or HCV antibodies, and specific treponemal antibodies, respectively. Rapid diagnostic testing are simple instrument-free assays that may be performed by personnel who have received basic training and this test doesn’t require any laboratory facilities.
